Your DJ does more than play music — they run the flow of your entire reception and set the energy of the night. Asking the right questions before you book is the difference between a packed dance floor and an awkward one. Here are the questions that actually matter, grouped so you can work through them in one conversation.

Experience and fit

  • How many weddings have you personally performed at, and how long have you been DJing them?
  • Will you be the DJ at our wedding, or could the company send someone else?
  • Have you worked at our venue before? If not, how do you prepare for a new space?
  • Can we see video or hear mixes from past weddings?

Music and crowd reading

  • How do you build our playlist, and how do you balance our requests with keeping the floor full?
  • How do you handle guest song requests on the night?
  • Will you honor our must-play and do-not-play lists?
  • How do you keep the dance floor going if the energy dips?

Emcee and coordination

  • Do you also act as emcee for announcements and introductions?
  • How do you coordinate timing with our planner, photographer, and caterer?
  • Will you help build and run our reception timeline?

Equipment and backups

  • What equipment do you provide, and is lighting included?
  • Do you carry backup gear — speakers, mics, mixer, power — in case something fails?
  • Who is your backup DJ if you have an emergency on our date?

Pricing and the contract

  • What exactly is included in your package, and what costs extra (travel, overtime, lighting, ceremony coverage)?
  • What's your deposit, when is the balance due, and is the deposit refundable?
  • Does the contract include an overtime clause and a clear cancellation policy?
  • Are you licensed and insured?

A few green flags to listen for

The best wedding DJs answer clearly, carry backup equipment as a matter of course, build detailed timelines, and respect your must-play and do-not-play lists. Vague answers about who will actually show up, or no plan for equipment failure, are worth a second look.
